ââ¬ÅImpact of Television Violation on Childrenââ¬â¢s Socializationââ¬Â Essay Example Essay Example
ââ¬Å"Impact of Television Violation on Childrenââ¬â¢s Socializationâ⬠Essay Example Paper ââ¬Å"Impact of Television Violation on Childrenââ¬â¢s Socializationâ⬠Essay Introduction Children are to be considered as the hope of the tomorrow. They are the one who make our world beautiful and meaningful because of their innocence and simplicity. But are these facts still true nowadays? Or it will be just a ââ¬Å"dreamâ⬠for us now? Childrenââ¬â¢s characters, personalities and their totality as individual first develop and mold inside the home where parents are oblige and responsible to teach their children the good values and morals. But the irony for this issue is that, parents tend to forget their responsibilities as parents in supervising their kids, due to their hectic schedules and demands of their work, especially in watching television where children are expose to different kinds of indecent advertisements and commercials. Parents should allot time in spending quality moments and be on the side of their children in order for them to explain the advertisements and commercials which have an adult content. This paper intent to scrutinize the regulating of controversial television advertising and their content, but what is more important is doing this while upholding the first Amendment and; (2) impact of controversial television violation on childrenââ¬â¢s socialization.II. DiscussionTelevision is a very powerful tool to the learning of the children and it can educate them in many ways whether it is profitable or destructive to their morals and values. It contributes much most especially when parents let their children watch indecent television shows anytime of the day without their supervision. There are also shows on TV that create fear to the hearts of these children because they are able to internalize what they have seen. In a researched entitled ââ¬Å"Televisionâ⬠and conducted by the University of Michigan Health System stated that ââ¬Å"in a usual American household, there are about 7 hours spend by children in watching television everyday and there are about tens of thousands of commercials observed by the kids on TV which the public relations mark. And not only that, every year the range of 1,000 to 2,000 children watched TV ads for alcohol and the fears attributed by the television can create sleep problems. A survey showed that there was about 37 percent of the kids stated that they were terrified by a TV story and the symptoms for this included anxious feelings, withdrawing from friends, nightmares.(see ââ¬Å"Televisionâ⬠University of Michigan Health System). There are also commercials that speak about sex. It is called sex in advertising. The use of sexual attraction as a tool of persuasion by drawing attention, interest to a particular product for the purpose of promotion and increase in sales had been a part of marketing and advertising industry for quite some time. The method generally uses attractive models, usually in a suggestive or provocative scene. The past two decades have witnessed an increasing use of explicit sexual appeal in consumer-oriented print advertising and particularly of women as the object of sexual desire that it has reached to the point of being common. The use of sex in advertising can range from being highly overt to extremely subtle; from explicit displays of sexual acts or nudity, down to the use of basic cosmetic products to enhance attractiveness. The more subtle forms of this spectrum have seeped into other types of media. One such example is the criteria in the selection of DJs and announcers, which is based on the ââ¬Å"sexinessâ⬠of their voice. The use of sexual imagery in advertising has received a barrage of criticisms on various grounds. Moral and religious groups oppose it for being obscene. Feminist groups raise the issue of womenââ¬â¢s rights, that it reduces women as mere ââ¬Ëobjectsââ¬â¢. Others believe that it only reinforces sexism.A. RegulationsWay back in 1924, the American Association of Advertising Agencies published a code of ethics, stating that the following practices were unethical:à · Fa lse or misleading claims about the product, whether visual or verbalà · Testimonials which does not truly speak of the real choice of a witnessà · Price claims which is purposely done to mislead the publicà · Statements which unfairly disparage a competing product or serviceà · Claims which are unproven/untested, or claims that puts statements out of context to distort the true meaning made by professional or scientific authoritiesà · Statements, pictures, or suggestions which are offensive to public decencyEach of these ethical codes is quite vague in nature which allows a wide range of interpretations. Consequently advertisers push the limits of what is actually acceptable to advertise about their services or wares. It is in the last code wherein sex is more or less addressed as being potentially offensive to the public. The next deliberation is on the issue of what is NOT offensive to one person, may be horrible to another. It is subjective. The responsibility now lies on th e advertiser to maintain a delicate balance (see K. Stirtz. ââ¬Å"For Most of Us, Sex Does Not Sellâ⬠).A prevailing advertising belief through the last two decades is the power of sexual imagery and suggestions on consumers. Neil E. Harrison, of the Canadian Business and Current Affairs wrote that ââ¬Å"advertisers recognize that ââ¬Ësex sellsââ¬â¢ because it attracts attentionâ⬠. It is not sexual images or suggestion that sells the product per se, but the technique of attention-getting that has always been the cornerstone of advertising ââ¬â whether consumers look with interest, or look in disgust. The point advertisers seek is for consumers to LOOK, and if the imagery pushes the borderline of what is shocking or offensive, the more it is retained in the consumerââ¬â¢s memory. However, an article ââ¬Å"Playing the Gameâ⬠wrote that sexual images are ineffective especially when it is ironically diametrically opposed to the product it tries to sell (T B all, P Avers. ââ¬Å"A Brief History of Sex in Advertisingâ⬠).B. Its EffectivenessSex in marketing through the years has become raunchier and raunchier, with each advertisement trying to outdo the last. Since it has become a powerful force in the marketing industry, we see the market being saturated with signs of glamorous blond women and muscle-rippling playboys. However, recent studies indicate that such a tool is no longer the sure-way answer to every marketing officerââ¬â¢s prayer.Although most companies utilize sex as their largest promoter of their product(s), negative results may never be far behind. Sexual ads do not always appeal to all consumers and accept sex as an acceptable marketing tool. A study done by Susan Cummings for the American Demographics Magazine, quoted that ââ¬Å"75 percent of women and 53 percent of men aged 35 to 54 said that sex in advertising can be offensiveâ⬠(Cited in ââ¬Å"Sex Sells. No, Really!â⬠).Other concerns being raised is how the youth react to this and how they perceive sex in advertising. There are many different opinions on how sexual appeal in advertising is defined. A slight difference had been found between young men and women. Sexual appeal for young women did not depend on how people looked in the advertisement. Focus is more on movement. It does not even have to include nudity, and models need not be exceptionally good looking for the ad to be even considered sexual. Young men also believe that the movement and the appearance of the models are of great importance. Both genders perceive an ad as sexual through words and images, even without images of nudity among the characters. Therefore, this study came to the following conclusions: that advertisement do not have to contain nudity to be perceived by young men and women as sexual in character; even movement and appearance of the models in the advertisement can make it sexual in nature; young men differ from their women counterparts in the se nse that they believe that exceptional good looks among models require an ad campaign to be so. They also believe that there is too much sex in advertising, even observing that there are companies who make use of sexual appeal even if their product is discordant with the sexual image. These young men also see advertisements as discriminating to both men and women. This research also came to the same conclusion that buying behavior does not change, since nudity in advertisement has become so common.Young female respondents also believe that there is too much sex in advertising and these failed to elicit responses. Reaction of tension came only if the image is tasteless. However, for young women, attitude and buying behavior might change if an advertisement based on sexual appeal is too sexual. A favorable response comes only if the sexual appeal is done tastefully and the appeal has any connection towards the brand. Their self-image and confidence is affected when it showed attractiv e models. Corporations are then urged to make considerations in aiming advertising towards youth in using sexual appeals in their advertisement campaigns. This means that children are prone to adapt thwarted values and morals which will affect sooner to their development as individuals and contribute in the later part of their lives. Being TV addicts is more treacherous and hazardous than taking a drug because it disseminates violence, spoils peopleââ¬â¢s intellects, and ruins not only the individual but as well as our nation and culture.III. ConclusionsA. Effects on childrenWe cannot deny the fact that children are great imitators and that is one of their natures. They really follow and imitate what they have seen and observed from other people especially when they realize that these people involve manifests excitement in doing such acts. Present televisionââ¬â¢s advertisements, commercials, shows and movies already content indecent acts such as violence, sensual actions or se x, drinking and taking drugs which have great impact to the minds of the younger generations. These kinds of entertainments will create curiosity and puzzlements to their young minds that will push them to try it by themselves. The advertisers really put an effort to convey their audiences-whether young or old-whom the actions perform on TV, those actions are worth emulating for and because of this, children are motivated to imitate it. The University of Michigan Health System further discussed that ââ¬Å"TV shows usually speak about the use of alcohol. The existence of alcohol on TV resorts the gamut from prime-time programs. In addition, the researched informed us that those who are TV addicts are more similarly to smoke cigarettes and marijuana. However, parents are not open in discussing issues such as birth control, sexually transmitted disease and sex and even schools are lacking to give information about sex education programs and due to such reasons, children are able to acq uire sex information through watching TV. In a survey disclosed the fact that there were about 76 percent of teenagers attested that one intuition why young people indulge in sex because TV movies and programs make such thing as common and ordinary for their age group (see ââ¬Å"Televisionâ⬠University of Michigan Health System). ââ¬Å"Impact of Television Violation on Childrenââ¬â¢s Socializationâ⬠Essay Thank you for reading this Sample!

Apple vs The World essays
Apple vs The World essays In past years, Apple was on a downward spiral, but now the Mac is back on the right track. The interim CEO Steve Jobs has brought them from expected quarterly loses to now, first quarter net income of some 150 millions dollars. The question still remains, is Apple back to stay? With the Windows driven world of today, can Apple assert them self to claim market share? Apples stunning new hardware, user-friendly operating system, and drive for incredible new technology, will not only compare Apple to traditional PC and software maker but will stun the rest of the computer world along the way. On July 21, 1999, PC Data released a report stating the iMac, Apples entry level personal computer, was the best selling retail and mail order computer in the month of June. There are a number of different reasons why this computer beat out all other PCs on the market. One reason is the new and exciting colors the iMac is being offered in. Instead of the traditional color, beige, being offered by Dell or Gateway, the iMac comes in strawberry, blueberry, grape, tangerine and lime. Another feature for the iMac is the speed of the computer compared to the computers in its class. According to the BYTEmark integer test, the 333-MHz G3 processor in the iMac is almost twice as fast as the 500-MHz Intel Pentium III found in professional computers found today. The iMac is not the only computer offered by Apple. They have a line of professional personal computers called the G3 series. These computers are the fastest personal computers on the market today, beating other computers such as the Gateway 550-MHz Pentium III PC. Another main reason the iMac is such a big success and Apple in general is coming back is their operating system called the MacOS. Its number one feature is its user-friendliness. Apple computers such as the iMac are called plug-and-play computers. This means you plug a device int ...

ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT - Essay Example Some individuals monitor themselves in every condition and try to improve with time and circumstances. The ability to adapt in such individuals is always high. They utilize their social environments as a source of information. They are concerned about their actions in social gathering, social comparison information and demand of different situations. Various factors of internal and external environment influence individuals in different ways. Moral norms, attitudes, motives, social roles, type of family and guardianship, economic conditions, gender and social view towards particular gender, language and symbols and others influences value system of an individual. It has influence on their decision-making ability, level of confidence and self-perception. Risk is an uncertain situation. Fear of unknown is the most common threat of people experiencing any kind of risk. Risk can be of two forms i.e. inner risk of an individual like low self esteem, low level of confidence, language diffi culty or lack of ability while outer risk can be risk of not getting proper education, recognition, risk from cultural and community life, risk from society and many others. ââ¬Å"In the last decade, the focus has shifted from burnout to secondary traumatic stress due to the recognition of the specific challenges of working with traumatized individuals. Whether we are addressing the impact of working with others in general or those, who have been traumatized, research agrees that we have a responsibility to maintain our own health and wellness as counselors (Iliffe & Steed, 2000; Miller, 1998; Savicki & Cooley, 1982; Sexton, 1999; Sherman, 1996) (as cited in OHalloran and Linton 2000) People react to their adverse situations differently. Some people lose their ability to work or perform under stress or high risk situations. This influences their decision-making abilities and positive development. At the same time, some individuals react differently to stressful and risky situations.

Corporate Governance & Social Responsibility Essay
Corporate Governance & Social Responsibility - Essay Example Business organizations should not be interested only on the shareholders (tutor2u, 2011, para.4). The employees as well as the users of these products need to be considered in the development of the operational strategies of the organization. The concern addressed here should reflect on the type and quality of product offered to the consumers. While some products have no adverse effect on the social life of the users, others like alcohol drinks and bhang are often associated with serious social issues. Excessive drinking and drug abuse contribute significantly to other social issues like domestic violence, sexual abuse, or even manslaughter. Product advertisement After developing a product, a business company would always want to let its product be known in the market. This is achieved through extensive promotion and advertisement of the product. The advertisements often appeal to the consumers on the benefits of the product. The contents of the advert will influence its effectivenes s (Gunter, Oates, & Blades, 2005, p.123). The adverts explain why the product ranks well above the other products in the market and provide a direction on how to use the product (eHow, 2011, para.1). Largely, the advertisements have significant impacts on the usage of the products. Researches have shown that exposure to some advert increases the consumption of the advertised product (Gunter, Oates, & Blades, 2005, p.123). Ideally, this objective of advertisement (appealing to the public to buy the product) should apply to those products not associated with social problems. However, for products that influence the society, especially the underage, the advertisements only need to be informative. The adverts should indicate prices of the product as well as where they could be obtained. For the alcoholic drinks in particular, the advertisements should stress on the targeted age group and emphasis that they should not be sold to underage. The associated health problems also need to be in dicated in the adverts and containers of the products. Spykes and the companyââ¬â¢ decision to stop its sales It is not appropriate to rule out that Spykes was a bad product. The company studied the market trend that had been recorded in the past. Its development acme about after the company had observed that taste was moving from their traditional domestic brands like Budweiser (Case study, p.497). The product was not developed to attract underage drinkers as per the criticisms. Instead, it was targeting the drinkers in the age bracket of 21-30 (Case study, p.497). Besides, the product had caffeine additive to improve on its energy content. It also had lower alcohol content than the wine; it had 12% alcohol content. The only mistake that the company did was that they did not emphasize on the age bracket that was targeted by the product. Even though the product was developed to attract the young adults, its sweetest taste was criticized to attract the teenagers. It is assumed tha t alcoholic drinks with high-energy content are popular among the teenagers (Case study, p.498). The decorations at the website were also seen as appealing more to the teenagers than adults. After all the criticism that was launched on the product and its advertisement, the company did the right thing to withdraw the product. The so-called ââ¬Å"self-appointedâ⬠civil activists are very significant influential in the market as

Assignment 2 Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
2 - Assignment Example The company owns over 7 million hectares of land across the Northern Territory and Queensland. The companyââ¬â¢s strategy is to operate in diversified agribusiness operations and bring innovation in existing business practices in order to achieve long term gains. ActivEX Limited is an Australian mineral and exploration company that specialises in identifying, acquiring, and distribution of minerals. The company aims to increase shareholdersââ¬â¢ value by investing into quality projects including minerals such as gold, copper, cobalt, etc. The company is involved in activities such as drilling, soil testing and mapping, data compilation, and reviewing. Adcorp Australia is a leading advertising agency owned locally and offers services including branding, advertising, creative design, event management, media planning and promotions. a) The monthly returns of the three companies are calculated using the following formula: Monthly return = (Current adjusted close price/Previous adju sted close price) ââ¬â 1 The historical prices of the three companies are obtained from Yahoo Finance and the individual monthly returns of the three chosen stocks are shown in the appendices section. The period under study was for 61 months ending on Dec 31, 2012. The calculations are made in the MS-Excel spreadsheet application using the above formula to calculate monthly returns. Then the average monthly return is calculated using the Excel function AVERAGE that computes the average of given numbers. The standard deviations of adjusted closing prices are calculated using the STDEV function of MS-Excel. Standard deviation is the measure of risk of investment which measures the stock volatility over a given period of time. The expected return from the stock is calculated using the CAPM (Capital Asset Pricing Model) approach, where there is the concept of Beta. From the above summarised risk-return analysis, it can be said that the returns of all the three stocks are equal since beta is very close to zero but it is positive. This means that investment in either of the companies is safe as it is apparent that the standard deviation of market index (AORD) is more volatile than the chosen stocks. From the theory of risk-return, it can be said that the higher the risk, the higher would be potential return. This is true in case of AORD since the risk borne by the investor must be compensated by higher expected returns. When the individual stocks of the companies are compared to AORD, it can be said that all the three stocks have lower standard deviation or risk associated with investment. This would alternatively mean that the returns from these stocks would be lower due to less associated risk. This can be verified from the expected return that calculates the estimated return from the stock using CAPM. In this study it was found that expected return of AORD was higher than the three chosen stocks due to a higher risk. Also, for the given return, the rational i nvestor would select the stock that is least risky and in this study riskiness of investment is determined using standard deviation. A higher value of standard deviation means that the stock is more risky and vice versa. From the above table, it can be said that Activex Limited is the least risky (the lowest standard deviation among other two stocks) and Australian Agriculture Co. Ltd is the riskiest (the highest standard deviation among other two stocks). b) In order to estimate the beta for each of three chosen

Friendship Statistics Between the ages of 15 and 25 is when most people establish lifelong friendships. Singles tend to rely on friends for companionship. Best friends usually become an extended family. College friends are somewhat different than friends from high school because you bond in different ways. You may bond during late night study sessions, making dinner together, or during long drives home. Theyre somewhat like your family away from home. Some friends may make sure that you wake up in time for your midterm or make you soup when youre sick. During college there are a variety of ways to develop these friendships, which have the potential of becoming lifelong friendships. Living with Roommates Sometimes many students make lifelong friendships with their roommates. If you have a good experience with your roommate during your first year of college, you may want to continue living with that roommate. You may also decide to live with other people as well. Sharing a house or an apartment allows you to spend time with people and really get to know who they are. You may learn things that only their families know about them like how long they take in the shower or what kinds of odd things they like to eat. Living together also provides opportunities for a lot of inside jokes, which can create even stronger bonds. You may also become closer when one of you becomes sick, and the parental instinct kicks in. Joining a Club By joining a club, you may be able to find people who share similar interests. Usually college campuses offer a variety of clubs like those that are associated with academic majors, public interests, politics, music, or careers. There are also fraternities and sororities at different colleges. Clubs provide an opportunity to meet people outside of the classroom, and the opportunity for you to get involved with something that youre passionate about. Being involved in extracurricular activities may also alleviate some of your stress. Making Friends for Life Developing lifelong friendships does take some time. Dont be discouraged if the first couple of people you meet dont turn out to be the type of friends you were hoping for. You may need to keep on trying to meet new people. You may make friends with people who you wouldnt have considered being friends with before. If you feel uneasy about the friends you have made, try to remember what you liked about your friends from high school. Keep yourself surrounded by good people who share similar goals to help you stay on track. Tough Decisions You are young, free and have your whole life before you. You have to choose which path you take in life: Do you want to go to college or graduate school? Should you try out for that team? What type of friends do you want to have? Who will you date? What values will you choose? What will you stand for? What kind of relationship do you want with your family? How will you contribute to your community? When The Going Gets Tough The tough challenges are conflicts between doing the right thing and doing the easier thing. They are the key tests, the defining moments of life and how you handle them can literally shape your life. They come in two kinds, small challenges and major challenges. Small Challenges occur daily and are easier to conquer. They include things like: Getting up when your alarm rings Controlling your temper Disciplining yourself to do your homework. Overcoming spending urges and saving money. If you can conquer yourself and be strong during these challenges your days will run much more smoothly. Soon enough, these moments will prove to have less and less power over your life. Major Challenges occur every so often in life and include things like: Choosing good friends Resisting negative peer pressure Rebounding after a major setback Parents divorcing Getting cut from a team These challenges have huge consequences and often strike when youre least prepared for them. If you recognize that these moments will come then you can be prepared for them and meet them head on. Peer Pressure What is Peer Pressure? It is the pressure, stress or strain we all feel from friends and classmates to act, behave, think and look a certain way. This kind of pressure can cover everything from fashion to sex and dating. Peer pressure can be negative, where someone is coerced into doing something that they know is wrong (e.g. drugs, smoking, or pressure to have sex) or it can be positive, for example, a teen whose friends are all high achievers in school will feel pressure to also be successful. Beware of friends that seem to be friends but really are not. They may try to take advantage of you. Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. They may do some things to you that you would never do to them. Who is Affected By Peer Pressure? Anyone can be affected by peer pressure; however, teens with low-self esteem are most likely to fall victim to negative peer pressure. Overcoming Peer Pressure Some of the hardest moments come when facing peer pressure. Saying no when all of your friends are saying yes takes raw courage. Sometimes peer pressure can be so strong that the only way to resist it is to remove yourself entirely from the environment youre in. This is especially true if you are involved with a gang, sorority, or a tight group of friends. To overcome peer pressure, youve got to care more about what you think of you than what your peers think of you. So Why is Peer Pressure so Hard to Resist? It is because you want to belong. Everyone wants to feel accepted by some sort of a group. Thats why teens are often willing to go through brutal hazing rituals to become a member of a club or get heavy into drugs or drinking in order to fit into a particular group. Sometimes you simply need a wake-up call to snap out of it. Why do Teens Pressure Other Teens to do Things? Some teens believe that manipulating people to do things they shouldnt gives them a sense of control over others. Some teens are jealous and envious of what you have, but only want to be more like you. Some teens think its cool to try to get away with doing things that are wrong just to see if you will side with them. Some teens use pressure to get whats best for them, even though they know that the outcome wont be good for you. This is very self-centered thinking. How do You Walk Away from Peer Pressure when you Know its Having a Negative Impact on you? The idea that ââ¬Å"everyones doing it, so it must be coolâ⬠is not always true. Dont go along if you are uncomfortable with the idea. Ignore the person. Hang out with people who dont pressure you to do risky things. Even though its tough to say ââ¬Å"noâ⬠you can do it if you believe in yourself. Try it and see how good it makes you feel. Often, you will find others agreeing with you. It can really make things a lot easier if you have at least one other friend who is on your side. Make up your mind beforehand that certain things in life will always be a definite ââ¬ËNO; like drugs, cigarettes, lying and stealing. Remember that the values that your parents taught you will make you stronger in handling peer pressure and you can always use them as your excuse as why you wont do something. Since it is rather difficult to always say no to friends, try and choose likeminded people as friends. Refuse to let yourself down. If you can think of peer pressure as letting yourself down, it becomes easier to combat it. It will make you feel more confident and raise your own self -esteem. Ways to Resist Negative Peer Pressure Walk away. Ignore the person Pretend that the person must be joking. (ââ¬Å"What a riot! You are so funny.â⬠) Say no calmly but firmly. Say no and give a reason (ââ¬Å"No. Cigarette smoke makes me sick.â⬠) Say no and state a value or belief thats important to you. (No. Ive decided not to have sex until I get married.â⬠) Say no and warn about the possible consequences. (ââ¬Å"No way! We could all get expelled.â⬠) Say no and change the subject. (ââ¬Å"No, Im not interested. Say, what did you think of that stunt Clarisse pulled in math class today?â⬠) Say no and offer a positive alternative. (ââ¬Å"No thanks, Ill pass. Im going for a bike ride. Want to come?) Say no and ask a question. (No! Why would I want to do that?â⬠) Say no and use humor. (ââ¬Å"Forget it. Id rather go play on the freeway; its safer.â⬠) Say no and apply some pressure of your own. (ââ¬Å"No. Hey, I always thought you were smarter than that.â⬠) Share your feelings. (ââ¬Å"I dont like being around people who are drinking.â⬠) Use your parents as an excuse. (ââ¬Å"My dad would kill me if I ever did that.â⬠) Stick up for yourself. (ââ¬Å"Im not going to do that. It wouldnt be good for me.â⬠) Confront the person. (ââ¬Å"I cant believe youd ask me to do that. I thought you were my friend.â⬠) Call another friend to help you. Always have an out a Plan B. Unhealthy Relationships What Makes a Healthy Relationship? Mutual respect The key is that your significant other is into you for who you are for your great sense of humor, your love of reality TV, etc. Does your partner listen when you say youre not comfortable doing something and then back off right away? Respect in a relationship means that each person values who the other is and understands and would never challenge the other persons boundaries. Trust Its ok to get a little jealous sometimes jealousy is a natural emotion. But how a person reacts when he or she feels jealous is what matters. Theres no way you can have a healthy relationship if you dont trust each other. Honesty This one goes hand-in-hand with trust because its tough to trust someone when one of you isnt being honest. Support Its not just in good times that your partner should support you. Some people are great when your whole world is going well, but cant take being there when things are going wrong. In a healthy relationship, your significant other isà there with a shoulder to cry on whenà you find out your parents are getting divorced and to celebrate with you when you get the lead in a play. Fairness/equality You need to have give-and-take in your relationship, too. Do you take turns choosing which new movie to see? As a couple, do you hang out with your partners friends as often as you hang out with yours? Youll know if it isnt a fair balance. Things get bad really fast when a relationship turns into a power struggle, with one person fighting to get his or her way all the time. Separate identities In a healthy relationship, everyone needs to make compromises. That doesnt mean you should feel like youre losing out on being yourself. When you started going out, you both had your own lives your own families, friends, interests, hobbies, etc. à and that shouldnt change. Neither of you should have to pretend to like something you dont, give up seeing your friends, nor drop out of activities you love. You also should feel free to keep developing new talents or interests, making new friends, and moving forward. Good communication Youve probably heard lots of stuff about how men and women dont seem to speak the same language. We all know how many different meanings the little phrase no, nothings wrong can have, depending on whos saying it! But whats important is to ask if youre not sure what he or she means, and speak honestly and openly so that the miscommunication is avoided in the first place. Never keep a feeling bottled up because youre afraid its not what your BF or GF wants to hear or because you worry about sounding silly. What Makes an Unhealthy Relationship? A relationship is unhealthy when it involves mean, disrespectful, controlling, or abusive behavior. Some people live in homes with parents who fight a lot or abuse each other emotionally or physically. For some people who have grown up around this kind of behavior it can almost seem normal or ok. Its not! Qualities like kindness and respect are absolute requirements for a healthy relationship. Someone who doesnt yet have this part down may need to work on it with a trained therapist before he or s

Death in Do Not Go Gentle, City Cafeteria, Death Shall Have no Dominion
Death in Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night, City Cafeteria, And Death Shall Have no Dominion and Grandparentsà à à à à à Death is a highly personal event. It affects each of us differently. It affected Peter Kocan's man in the City Cafeteria by making him look empty and disoriented. It affected Dylan Thomas by making him think about what there was afterward, and what you could do to avoid it. Death even affected Robert Lowell by making him realise how much it changed his life. I, fortunately, seem to have avoided death in many ways, but also have been touched by it, even recently. While preparing for this essay, ironically, one of my family pets died. It was a chicken named Ellephante, which belonged to my younger sister. I didn't know what to think. I don't think, even now, several days later, that I feel the chicken has gone. I suppose I'm denying it. I constantly revisit, in my mind, the times I went into my back yard to be greeted with a flutter of wings and a white body racing down the hill to greet me. I imagine this feeling to be similar to the one expressed in Grandparents, by Robert Lowell. He feels, as he walks around the farm, which now belongs to him, certain pangs of loneliness, of missing his grandparents. Small things set him off - the gramophone and the billiard table with the coffee stain. Small things still set my sister off - going up to the chook shed to feed the remaining chooks, or looking out the window and not seeing that other white shape we came to know and love as Ellephante. Taken before its time (the next-door dog is undoubtably the culprit), I do not feel that Ellephante 'went gentle into that good night'. Ellephante was a feisty chicken, always very vocal and very affectionate and tame... ... I look to death as Dylan Thomas does - as a natural progression from life. I don't know quite what I believe in - some days it's reincarnation, some days it's a very scientific returning to a state of atoms in different forms, some days (when I'm upset) it's just being buried and then it stops, some days it's being taken from this world to another. I don't know that I believe in a Heaven or Hell, as such, but it's nice to think about it some times. Unlike so many people I know, I don't fear death - I used to, but I have come to accept it as an inevitable part of life, which everyone will have to face. I just know that when it's my time to depart, I want people to remember the good times and not to dwell on the bad. Essay about abortion Essay
It is true that abortion may be the death of an innocent being. If that is correct, any woman who has had an abortion should be subject to the consequences of a premeditative first degree murderer, which could possibly be the death penalty. However, the question that truly forms the debate is this: Is the zygote really a human being? Surely there are signs that show life, but is it developed enough to function as a human? I contend that the fetus is not a right-possessing individual, until the point of birth. It cannot claim any rights, while it is still part of the mother. Being part of the mother, it is the motherââ¬â¢s. What happens to her body through the course of her pregnancy is her choice. Therefore, abortion is solely the motherââ¬â¢s choice, and outsiders should not block, or even oppose, her rights as an American. Certainly todayââ¬â¢s society needs to clean up itââ¬â¢s act. In most young adults, good morals arenââ¬â¢t commonly used. But they do use their common sense. Young adults are fully aware of what they are getting into, they just arenââ¬â¢t sure of all the consequences. Education plays a big role in this issue. Being taught about birth control and planned parenting statistically helps the number of accidents that can cause abortion. Nevertheless, accidents will happen. Rape will still occur, there will be the rebels, the careless, and the clueless. People make mistakes every day. There should be something to fall back on in a case of an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. Abortion can be for the well-being of both the mother and the potential child. A woman needs to take full responsibility of her actions. For instance, in a pregnancy, this can come in different forms. It can be when the woman decides to carry to term and be the childââ¬â¢s mother, or when she gives it up for adoption. She can also pay for her own abortion. As a result, the mother will be doing what she truly believes is morally right for the being growing inside of her. Of course the possibility of putting an innocent being to death, is seemingly absurd, and though one may not believe that the being is actually living, there is the possibility. Also, the child the woman is carrying may have the cure for cancer or AIDS. Or it could be the next serial killer. The being might very well deserve a chance at life. On the contrary, there are womenà who truly arenââ¬â¢t ready to have a child. This is not only mentally, but physically and emotionally also. I admit that I will never get an abortion, but I strongly believe that it is a necessary option. Also if the child is impaired, has birth defects, Downs Syndrome, or any deadly or life-threatening disease that can be detected before birth, should it live? A woman needs to have the choice of how she wants her potential childââ¬â¢s life to be lived. A woman needs the options to be open. If she does not want to give the baby up for adoption, should she be forced to if she doesnââ¬â¢t have enough money to care for it? So, the mother should be entitled to any decision concerning the being living inside of her, because the chances are that the choice the mother makes will be beneficial. Surely there are people who will get into a pregnancy that have no idea what they are doing. They may get scared and decide to just have an abortion because they arenââ¬â¢t ready to have a child. A woman may feel that this will end all of her hopes and dreams for the future. They may or may not realize that there are other options such as adoption. However, what the woman decides to do, in my opinion, is completely her choice. The being that is growing inside of her body, is hers. Wendy McElroy says, ââ¬Å"Everything beneath the skin is me; this is the line which no one has the right to cross without permission.â⬠Say the world comes to where you can take one pill which would murder the growing being. Could she not have the right to swallow? Can a woman claim the right to her own body when she canââ¬â¢t even control what goes into it? People do not have contracts with their neighbors, friends, and relatives saying that they will not steal from one another or kill each other. Everyoneââ¬â¢s body and property is theirs by right. If a fetus is granted individual rights, the contract is superfluous to those rightsââ¬â¢ protection. If these rights are not being claimed, there is no possibility for contracts, because a contract is voluntary. So, giving rights to a fetus is useless because of the fact that it will be living inside of the woman, and if she has the right to rid it from her body and wants to do so, the being cannot even fend for itself in the argument at all, and will end up not having itââ¬â¢s way. Admittedly, the number of diseases that are passed genetically has slightlyà decreased. Scientists have also been decoding human DNA. This can lead to pin-pointing the exact spot of birth defects and life-threatening diseases and fixing them. On the other hand, we have not yet reached that point in technology. Today testing is available for mothers to see if their potential child has any defects or disease. This greatly influences her decisions on whether to have the baby or not. There are so many factors that can affect the fragile time of pregnancy. There are endless possibilities of things that can be harmful to the growth and development of the baby. If the woman decides to go through with the pregnancy there are things that she can change about herself that can lessen the risk of defects. Such as smoking, drinking, drugs. The problem is that those things can mold the woman into being dependent on. If she chooses to continue to drink while she is pregnant, that is her choice, but she is not the only one who will be affected. If the woman feels that she would not want to have the possibility of her child being defected or doesnââ¬â¢t believe that she could make it with out drinking, she should have the option of abortion. In short, there are many ways that what the pregnant woman does that can change the outcome of her child, and she should be able to make her own decisions concerning the well-being of both herself and the unborn child. Obviously thereââ¬â¢s the good side and the bad side to abortion. What seems to be happening today is that people are getting too worked up about something that may never be solved. Both sides of the issue are sketchy, and are very controversial. We may never actually come to a conclusion. On the contrary, we need to look at the laws and see if it is legally possible to ban abortion, or let it freely take place. The question is if the zygote or fetus should be considered a live being or not. Finally, what you believe is your choice. Think a little about what other people may be going through and if a forced pregnancy is even a possibility. Whether you side with me, or are against abortion, always be open-minded.

Costs and Economic Naturalist Essays Costs and Economic Naturalist Essay Costs and Economic Naturalist Essay What does it mean to begin to think like an economic naturalist? Begin to thinks like an economic naturalist is start using a systematic way of examining the world by examining sunk cost. Now that you are becoming an economic naturalist from this point on,, discuss the key variables economists use to view their world and tell what each one represents? The key variables economists use to view their world is: Scarcity witch necessitates that choices must be made. Making choices implies the existence of ââ¬Å"opportunity costsâ⬠. The cost benefit principle: An individual (or a firm or a society) is better off taking an action if, and only if, the extra (marginal) benefit from taking the action is greater than the extra (marginal) cost. A rational person employs cost-benefit analysis in decision-making, which is also known as decision-making at the margin. Economic surplus: In general, maximizes make decisions in order to maximize economic surplus (the benefit of taking an action minus its cost). Opportunity cost of an action is = Direct cost Plus the best alternative forgone Less any savings derived from the activity. According to the author, what Four Pitfalls do most non-economists mismanage as they attempt to make important lifetime decisions? The four pitfalls according to the author are: 1. Measuring the Costs and Benefits as Proportions Rather than Absolute Dollar Amounts. 2. Ignoring Opportunity Costs 3. Failure to Ignore Sunk Costs 4. Failure to Understand the Average-Marginal Distinction Margins and averages are extremely important in studying and using microeconomics.

The Nature of Psychology essays
The Nature of Psychology essays Psychology, as we know it today, is the science of behavior and mental processes. It helps us to understand why people think, feel, and act the way they do. Psychology is a science just like Biology and Philosophy, both of which have had a major impact on psychology. Psychology is a word that encompasses many aspects, but probably the best way to understand its exact definition is to understand that it focuses solely on being a science of behavior and mental processes. The word psychology itself has a route in Greek language as meaning knowledge about soul life. The symbol for psychology also happens to be a Greek symbol known as psi. Psi is a letter from the Greek alphabet and is from where we get the word Psychology, and other related terms beginning with Psych-. There are many components that make up psychology, and each component has a corresponding face that goes with it. Body of knowledge is one such component and its face is teaching. Another component is the set of investigative methods which has the face of research. Lastly, array of techniques is a component and therapy is its face. Psychology has certain goals for understanding behavior that it tries to accomplish through various methods. The basic, general goals of psychology is to answer what, why when, and how. What is for a description, to describe the behavior. Why is an explanation, to try and explain why the behavior is the way it is. When is a prediction of behavior that predicts a certain time for a particular issue. How is used when we want to modify behavior in behavior modification. There are many specialized sub fields within psychology, being that it is such a broad science. Clinical psychologists are in one sub-field of psychology that I would personally find to be the most interesting. Their job description is more or less working ...

Table of Contents Table of Contents 3 Introduction 4 Analysis and critical evaluation of the organisation's strategic position 4 Analysis of the organisation's strategic direction 6 Critical evaluation of the organisation's strategy 8 Conclusions and Recommendation 9 Reference List 10 Appendix 11 Introduction The success of any good organization is based on the measu res that are laid by the stakeholders of the firm (Gilmore, 2003). In the business world, the strategy of the firm plays a fundamental role in the achievement of its objective. In the commercial setting, the principal aims of a company usually revolve around making profits, embrace growth and expansion and most importantly, diversification (Garrick, 2011). The aforementioned factors are the keys for the achievement of success in an industry that is flourishing. Most of the companies that have experienced success in the market have either followed a strategy that has been functioning properly for a number of years or with the ability to adapt to the changing environment (Alkhafaji, 2003). However, proper management is one of the main activities that help companies to realize its objectives and is thus deemed as a determinant (Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson, 2009). Reports have shown that business strategies have continuously been performing commendable jobs in ascertaining success withi n the organization. Hence, the above discussion has made it evident that strategy is one of the four pillars of a business venture and the backbone supporting and guiding the operations of a firm (Davis, 2008). Scorpions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Scorpions - Essay Example The main body is protected by body armor and bears four pairs of legs and pectines. Sensory organs at the end of their legs and the pectines are able to detect ground vibrations and chemical signals respectively. Their distinctive erectile and curved tail has a telson at the end which contains a sting. Scorpions also have a pair of pincers attached to the front of their heads, and their sting is venomous. Most scorpions grow to between 2 and 3 inches in length although some can be shorter at 0.5 inches and some can be longer such as the African emperor scorpion which can exceed 8 inches. Their color is typically either yellow, brown or black which helps them to camouflage and their bodies also contain fluorescent chemicals which makes them glow under ultraviolet light. Their body temperatures can also adjust quickly with their surroundings but they need to be warm to be active. Scorpions are usually found to exist in climates that are warm and dry such as in deserts although they hav e also been found to adapt to a wide variety of climates including savannahs, rain forests and snowy areas. They are able to survive droughts or the cold by hibernating in a dormant state. There are an estimated 1,500 different species of scorpions around the world. Scorpions are nocturnal creatures so they tend to hide during the day in places such as under rocks, in caves, inside cracks, in their own burrows, etc. and they hunt during the night. On the basis of their main dwelling, different types of scorpions can be identified as sand dwellers, rock dwellers, burrowing scorpions, cave dwellers, and there are also the arboreal scorpions that are agile and live in buildings and on trees. Among the most deadliest of scorpions is the Bark Scorpion that has a light brown color and is found in places such as Arizona, California and New Mexico where there is an abundance of scorpions, and the Deathstalker found in the Middle East and North Africa. In fact, scorpions are by nature predat ory creatures. They employ ambush tactics and can immobilize their prey using their pedipalps and if necessary their venom too so as to consume them. The scorpions are able to adjust the amount of venom according to the size of the prey. An acidic spray onto the prey then dissolves their tissues to make it easier to suck up their bodies. Their prey can include all other insects as well as other scorpions. Larger scorpions are even able to eat small vertebrates such as frogs, lizards, snakes and mice once they subdue them. The social behavior of scorpions is characterized by their solitary nature but some enjoy living in familial groups and some of them engage in colonial burrowing. Courtship involves a mating ritual wherein the male dances with the female in a dance called the 'promenade a deux' prior to mating. The eggs develop inside the bodies of the females and nourishment is given to the young from the yolk or in some cases directly from the mother's body. Gestation periods var y between 3 and 18 months but each brood usually contains between 25 and 35 young scorpions which are in some cases born two at a time. When born, the young scorpions climb onto the back of their mothers and receive their energy from the fat stored inside them. The young become independent after about two weeks, and they shed their own skin at least 5 times to mature fully. Their lifespans range from between 3 and 5 years although some live longer up to 15
